AI Voice Agents

AI Is About to Start Calling Your Leads

Ruben Davoli · · 7 min read

If an AI agent called you, would you answer? And more to the point, would you keep talking to it?

I got that question at a live event, along with a lot of sharp ones about where this is all going. This is the honest version of my answers.

Ask a better question

Most people ask, "What AI tool should I use? What's the shortcut?" Wrong question. Ask instead: what already works in my business that I'm still doing by hand? Find that, then use AI to scale it. AI is leverage on something that already works, not a way to invent something that doesn't.

Won't people just hang up on a robot?

Some will. There's a crowd that hangs up on any automated call in three seconds, and no tool changes that. But that's not the play I'm talking about.

The difference is who you're calling. Calling a stranger who never asked to hear from you is a different game than calling someone who just opted in or bought from you. Someone downloads your thing, and 60 seconds later a friendly agent calls referencing exactly what they just did, that isn't spam, it's good service. There's a widely cited study that contacting a lead within 60 seconds can lift results dramatically versus calling hours or days later.

The spam wave is coming, and that's fine

Yes, a lot of people will do this badly. There'll be a wave of low-quality agents and more spam. The good ones will win. If your business is legit and you point the agent at people who actually want to hear from you, you come out ahead as the rest of the noise gets ignored.

Scale it gradually

Don't point it at a thousand strangers on day one. Regulation is going to be messy for a while, and it's unclear in a lot of places. So start small, stay compliant, disclose that it's AI, and grow into it. Long term, people adapt. Talking to an AI for a transactional call will feel as normal as using a map app instead of paper.

How I keep it honest

Two things. I match the agent's call logs to a human sales manager, so at volume you can see instantly if something's flagged instead of finding out weeks later. And I let the numbers decide. If the KPIs are better than before and the customer experience is better, it works. If someone dislikes it on principle, fine, but the data is the judge, not opinion.

If you want the checklist for whether you're even ready for this, I wrote it up as the three conditions.
